Some simple safety precautions.

Before you start work restrict access to the work area. For your personal safety we recommend that you are wearing the following personal safety equipment and garments.

  • Steel toe capped boots
  • Long sleeved shirt and full length trousers
  • Leather gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Safety hat

Long Handle Lifting Key

The following tools and materials are required when working with the long handle lifting key.

  • Two long handle lifting keys
  • Short arm lifting key
  • Shifting spanner
  • Two to three lengths of 25 mm diameter water pipe, which should be at least 150 mm wider than the frame opening.
  • Wire brush
  • Screwdriver
  • Paint scraper
  • Sledge hammer
  • Grease

Brush away any loose materials from around the perimeter of the access cover and remove the plastic plugs from the keyholes, and any mechanical fasteners. For covers that may be difficult to remove complete the following procedure.

Insert the B.R. Durham & Sons short arm lifting key into the keyhole and ensure that it is engaged properly. Run the bolt down to apply a lifting force on the cover, breaking the seal.

For covers that are badly corroded causing the seating surfaces to bond together, it is suggested that the joint is soaked in penetrating oil for a period, prior to attempting removal. It may be necessary to strike the cover with the sledge hammer to shock fracture the bonded joint when pressure from the bolt is applied.
